The Obesity Myth follows the lives of morbidly obese patients at Melbourne’s Austin Health, a public hospital taking a different approach to the treatment of obesity. Backed by new research, doctors at Austin Health treat obesity as a chronic genetic disease. Patients are told, often for the first time in their life, their weight problems are not their fault but a result of their genetic predisposition to extreme hunger.
The treatment regimen using diet, medication and surgery to transform their lives is tough, restrictive and everyone struggles. But doing nothing isn’t an option as they face early deaths from obesity related illnesses.
